First Chair

  • Recently winning an AIA ID Award of Honor, First Chair is a contemporary office building located in the heart of downtown Ketchum. Designed as an urban infill project, it maximizes a compact site while responding thoughtfully to the scale, texture, and historic character of the surrounding streetscape. The building houses five tenant spaces, including Farmer Payne’s, making it a highly personal and carefully tailored environment.

The name references Ketchum’s history as the first ski resort to operate a powered chairlift, symbolizing local innovation and creative spirit. The project brings together local creatives working within the building sector, fostering community in the center of town.

Located on a major corner with a heavily used bus stop, the building incorporates a custom-designed canopy that provides shelter, integrated bench seating, and weather protection, reinforcing its contribution to the pedestrian experience and downtown vibrancy.
